Active participation and presentation of experiences by the Regulator’s representatives at an event on privacy protection
Representatives of the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media participated in a two-day event dedicated to privacy protection in the media, organised by the Council of Europe in Vrdnik on 16 and 17 March 2026.
During the event, the Regulator’s representatives actively contributed to the discussion by presenting the Regulator’s extensive experience in applying standards for the protection of privacy and personal dignity in electronic media. Particular emphasis was placed on the challenges the Regulator encounters in practice, as well as the importance of balancing the public’s right to know with the individuals' right to privacy.
Through dialogue with judges, staff from the Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Protection of Personal Data, as well as representatives of journalists' associations (UNS and NUNS), representatives of the Regulator’s technical services analysed the most recent case law of the European Court of Human Rights, including the “right to be forgotten”. On this occasion, the Regulator’s representatives emphasised the importance of preventive action and the continuous education of media service providers.
The participants of the event highlighted the need for closer mutual co-operation, and all present stakeholders expressed great interest in this type of networking and joint action. In that spirit, possibilities for future communication and the exchange of experiences in particularly sensitive cases were considered, such as those involving minors or victims of tragedies, in order to improve further the protection of privacy and dignity in the media space of Serbia through dialogue and preventive action.
The event is part of the activities implemented within the Protecting Freedom of Expression and of the Media in Serbia (PROFREX) project, which is part of the joint European Union and Council of Europe programme Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey 2023-2026.
