Enhancing the security and media literacy of young people in the digital environment
The Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media, in cooperation with representatives of the Ministry of the Interior – Service for Combating Cyber Crime, held a lecture on the topic of Internet Security and the Development of Critical Thinking among Children and Young People in the Digital Environment at the premises of the Criminal Police University, with the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The lecture was held as yet another in a series of activities organised by the Regulator within the fifth Open Days of Media Literacy, in the month designated for information security, and was intended for heads of education institutions, psychologists and pedagogists working in the education sector, expert associates and primary and secondary school teachers teaching media and digital literacy, and librarians.
Participants had the opportunity to hear practical advice on cyber security, with a special focus on the development of media literacy and critical thinking as a measure for the prevention of young people in the digital environment.
Some of the topics covered in the lecture included cyberbullying, online sexual exploitation, and manipulation through fake identities, which often begin with seemingly harmless interactions and escalate into serious forms of abuse, along with the misuse of artificial intelligence. A special part of the lecture was dedicated to the survey results presented by the Regulator regarding young people in the digital environment. Practical tools for working with children and young people aimed at raising awareness of media literacy were also presented, and concrete advice was given for enhancing their safety online, such as reporting via the website www.sajberstraza.gov.rs.
Those present, including representatives of the JICA Alumni Club in Serbia, were introduced to an infographic inspired by Japanese culture, intended for working with children and young people, concerning safety and raising awareness of digital literacy in this target group.
