Media literacy key to building society’s resilience to disinformation
Representatives of the technical services of the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media attended the Council of Europe conference on media literacy and integrity titled Building Resilience to Disinformation and Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference in Europe, which was held in Chisinau on 20 March.
The conclusion of the high-level conference held in the capital of Moldova is that media literacy is the key to developing critical abilities and the capacity to acquire resilience to disinformation, for which independent and viable media and strong institutions, trusted by citizens, are required.
Conference participants agreed that information integrity is important for democratic security integrity and is a prerequisite for a healthy social environment. Furthermore, participants agreed that information integrity issues are not only a reflection of freedom of expression, but of the application of human rights in democratic societies facing various challenges.
Two new publications related to the topic of the conference were presented at the meeting, prepared and published by the Council of Europe Steering Committee on Media and Information Society (CDMSI): National Media and Information Literacy Strategies – Practical Steps and Indicators and Resisting Disinformation – Ten Building Blocks to Strengthen Information Integrity.
On this occasion, representatives of the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media also visited Radio Television of Moldova, where they were introduced to the capacities of the public service – two television channels and three radio stations – its method of operation and its activities in the field of media literacy.
